Between December 1, 2024, and November 30, 2025, operations recorded 402,669 total misreads, with 92% attributed to owner’s chassis. To help reduce these occurrences, The Port of Virginia encourages our motor carrier partners to ensure that chassis decals are clear, accurate, and easy to identify.
Proper decals play an important role in keeping equipment moving efficiently. When markings are visible and compliant, they support accurate identification, minimize gate delays, and contribute to a safe, smooth interchange process.
Industry standards call for a 4‑letter alpha prefix followed by a 6‑digit numeric sequence. These identifiers should be displayed on both the main rails and rear bolsters using the following standard decal dimensions:
- Main rails: 6 in × 30 in
- Rear bolster: 2.5 in × 15 in
Standardized Decal Guidelines
- Owner Identification: Ensure the legal owner name or approved owner code is correct and up to date.
- Visibility: Markings should remain clear, legible, and unobstructed.
- Placement: Decals must appear on both sides of the chassis.
- Durability: Temporary markings (tape, marker, chalk) should not be used.
To help avoid delays, drivers operating owner’s chassis are encouraged to take a moment to verify that all decals meet these standards before arriving at the terminal. Chassis that do not meet requirements may need correction prior to processing.
Thank you for your continued cooperation and partnership.
