The Port of Virginia is committed to fostering a safe working environment across all terminals and facilities. Motor carriers are expected to follow these key safety protocols:
General Safety Requirements
- Speed Limit: 20 mph unless otherwise posted.
- Electronic Devices: No use of cell phones, headsets, Bluetooth, or earbuds while operating vehicles/equipment or within 50 feet of active cargo operations.
- Seatbelts: Mandatory use, including shoulder harnesses if equipped.
- Safety Gear:
- ANSI-2 yellow-green or orange vest/shirt
- Safety shoes (closed-toe)
- Hard hats in vertical hazard zones (e.g., under cranes)
- Eye and hand protection when using power tools
- Full PPE for chainsaw or battery servicing tasks
Behavioral and Operational Rules
- Headlights and hazard lights are to be turned off while backing into a stack lane
- No littering, feeding animals, or smoking/vaping near cargo containers, vessels, or inside work areas.
- Pedestrian Safety: Must use cones, barriers, or painted lanes when exposed to traffic.
- Transfer Zones: Motor carriers must remain in their lane unless using designated facilities (driver assistance phone, exception clerk, porta-toilet).
- Out-of-Gauge Cargo Areas: Stay in truck, next to groundman, or 50+ feet from moving equipment.
