Health, Safety & Environment

Committed to Safety Excellence.

Safety First. Always.

At The Port of Virginia, safety is more than a priority— it is a core value. Every decision, every operation, and every person on our terminals is guided by one unwavering principle: zero injuries. We believe that everyone who works in our terminals and facilities deserves to go home safely, every day.

We are on a mission to be the safest port in North America, and that starts with empowering every individual – employees, contractors, partners, and visitors – to take ownership of their safety and the safety of those around them. Then enabling them to do so by training them on what it means to collectively own safety, and providing a supportive management team by developing and embedding a learning corporate culture at our terminals and facilities.

Our Commitment to Safety Excellence

We believe a safe workplace is the foundation of operational excellence. That’s why we’ve built our safety culture around five key commitments:

By ensuring our safety policies, principles, and procedures are clearly communicated and understood.

By demonstrating and promoting a proactive safety culture through visible leadership.

By providing robust training and equipment necessary to accomplish all tasks safely.

By empowering all port patrons to act swiftly in preventing incidents and protecting one another.

By designing and continuously improving our operations and processes with the intent to learn from incidents and effectively minimize risks.

Safety Principles That Drive Us

  • All injuries and occupational illnesses can be prevented
  • Employees are held accountable for their safety and the well-being of those around them
  • Training employees to work safely is essential
  • All safety deficiencies must be corrected promptly
  • Safety drives success

Empowering Safety Champions

Our people and port partners are our greatest safety asset. We challenge our terminal teams to be safety champions by speaking up and reporting any unresolved safety issues directly to the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer through our Health, Safety & Environmental Team. Your voice matters and it drives change. If you observe unsafe behavior, or see an unsafe condition, say something.

A Culture of Respect & Recognition at America’s Most Modern Gateway

To achieve safety excellence, you must have a Just Safety Culture. Our safety program is built on a foundation of dignity, respect, integrity, and purpose. At The Port of Virginia, we recognize the contributions of every team member and provide opportunities to grow, lead, and make a meaningful impact in our mission to move commerce forward.
